He is given the best steed, a comely grey, and both the master and the horse fly so fast that theres no one left along, and at the same time the poem takes an ominous turn where the phrases like A rout this morning left Sir Walters Hall and This race it looks not like an earthly race are mentioned. Very soon in the eighth paragraph we find the horse dead. In the tribute to the dead hart, Sir Walter decides to build an arbour and make the dancers and singers perform during summers to further enliven this place which already seems (Such a sight that) was never seen by living eyes.

He names this place the HART- LEAP WELL. Sir Walter actually keeps his promise till the time of his death and there ends part 1. But what happens after that? Does the dell offer the same pleasure to its visitors years after the knight is dead, or things take a rather nasty turn?

To find that out and to feel the Gothic touch in the poem one has to go through the second part.
